Surfers discover new wave “Prowlers” off the west coast of Ireland

One of the positive effects of last weekend’s storm has been the perfect break for surf enthusiasts on the west coast of Ireland.

The wave which has been dubbed “Prowlers” by the crew of surfers who first ventured out into it yesterday, breaks on an undersea reef about 1.2 miles off the coast. The bold group, which includes Irish, British and South African surfers, have been waiting five years for the optimum conditions required to surf the wave.

The massive swell generated by Hurricane Thomas presented the perfect conditions, with heavy tubing waves with 40-50 ft faces.

Up until recently nothing has compared to “Aileen’s” wave off the Cliffs of Moher, which is recognized as one of the best known big waves in the world.

In recent decades Ireland has become a mecca for avid surfers with the Atlantic ocean providing excellent swells for both beginners and advanced surfers.
